Powder Compacts

Although early examples can date back to the 1920s, compacts started to become widely used in the mid 1930s. Their popularity peaked from the 1940s to around the late 60s at which time disposables with refill blocks began to take over as more convenient. There are hundreds of different designs and makers available, making compact collecting extremely interesting in its variety. Novelty compacts such as the Kigu ‘Flying Saucer’ and the Schuco animals command a premium but there are many reasonably priced compacts out there to start or expand your collection. For additional information about powder compact books consult our useful information section. If you require any further photos of any of the compacts listed please email us.

COMPACT1

Fantastic LE RAGE enamelled compact to celebrate the Festival of Britain in 1951. British symbols and coats of arms around the well known Festival of Britain design. The compact is in good used condition with a few shallow dinks in the base and some slightly darker marking on the inner lid. It comes with its original sifter and measures approximately 9cms in diameter. A very striking and evocative compact.

  COMPACT2

Such a striking compact design. This lovely Stratton Queen shaped compact has a central porcelain panel which is pained in Crown Derby colours and may even be a Crown Derby design. The compact has been used but is in very good condition. It is a convertible so could be used for either loose or compressed powder.  The compact is marked 'Stratton' on the bottom, Pat 764125 on the inner ring, and has neither pad not sifter. Wonderful pattern and vibrant colours. It measures approximately 8.5cms  in diameter.

COMPACT3

Fabulous American 1940s compact. It has a Lucite top, very cleverly done to look like tortoiseshell and has been decorated with pretty gold glitter butterflies. I don't believe has been used and is in very good condition with just a few light scuffs on the base as if it has been on someone's dressing table. It comes with its original pad, I don't think it ever had a sifter as it has an inner lid. The compact measures approximately 7cms by 6cms and has no maker's mark. Definitely one for the collection.

 COMPACT4

Darling little compact depicting two terriers which I think is probably a glove compact. The two terriers are not showing any signs of bravery as they contemplate tortoise that they have encountered. The compact has a gold tone back which is tooled in a deco half sunray design and inside is a central chrome mirror which is double sided with room for the rouge on one side and a well with an inner lid on the other for the powder. Quite unusual as it appears to be a left hand opening inner lid which I have not seen before as the snib for the inner lid is invariably on the right. The compact has been used and comes with one pad, but is in very good condition. It measures approximately 4cms by 4.7cms at its widest and has no markings. So cute!.

COMPACT5

Fabulous early French compact which is done in navy blue plastic with gold metal filigree inserts framing the lid. The lid itself has a picture of vibrant summer flowers, highlighted in gold and covered by a plastic insert to protect the colours. Beautiful vibrant poppies and cornflowers which are evocative of summer. Stamped 'Made in France' on the bottom it comes with a sifter and is in good used condition. There are some spots of fogging on the mirror but it is still perfectly useable. It measures approximately 8.5cms in diameter.

£42.00

COMPACT6

Very unusual Lucite compact of some quality. The compact is square, and has a central panel which depicts a white metal dog and a cockerel cut out like filigree and placed over a black enamel background. The filigree cleans like silver but there are no markings. The Lucite is tooled across the corners. Inside there is a pad and sifter and a mirror with a few feint marks on it. There does not appear to be a catch on this one nor signs of there having been one but the lid and base sit snugly together. A fabulous display piece it measures approximately 8.5cms by 8.5cms and probably dates to the 1940s.

COMPACT7

Gorgeous rich Eastern design on this Vogue Vanity compact. I believe that there were three designs in this Eastern series. Compact is in wonderful condition with the exception of a couple of very shallow dinks on the bottom. It is marked Vogue Vanities, Made in England on the inner lid and comes with its original sifter. It looks to have been hardly, if at all, used and measures approximately 9.5cms in diameter.

COMPACT8

Unusual to get a matching set. These Estee Lauder golden cancer items are a powder compact and a solid perfume compact. They are in great condition and do not appear to have been used. The powder compact, which comes with its original pad, is full of lucidity powder and the perfume compact has Pleasures solid perfume in it. They measure approximately 7cms and 4.5cms wide respectively. Lovely diamante highlighting!

COMPACT9

Small but very pretty petite point or tapestry compact. The scene, which is very fine work, probably Austrian, is of a lady with some flowers sitting by a mill stream with the water mill in the background. The back is plain black and the compact is made of gold tone metal that looks like brass. Good condition with a little fogging to the mirror which still reflects and is bevelled. It comes with its original sifter and measures approximately 5.5cms by 5.5cms.

£30.00

 COMPACT10

Striking butterfly wing compact by GWENDA. The top has a scene in silhouette of some trees on the edge of a lake with the moon rising in the background being mirrored in the water.  The butterfly wing is in good condition and does not show to its full advantage in the picture (always so difficult to capture the iridescence in a photo!!). The back is plain black and the inside, with it's chrome mirror, has a powder well and the original sifter. It measures approximately 7.5cms in diameter and is in good condition throughout with some feint scratches on the back. It is signed Gwenda under the mirror. These are becoming very difficult to find nowadays in good condition. The white at the bottom of the picture is just reflection from my scanner.

COMPACT11

Fabulous 1920s or early 30s tango compact done in black and red. The front is done in panels of red and black enamel with a tooled design showing through. This is surrounded by an intricate tooled border which is mirrored on the back surrounding a sunray design. The whole hangs from a finger ring. Inside there is a mirror with a circle for the rouge and a metal rotating sifter. The compact comes with its original pad, is in very good condition and measures approximately 5.5cms in diameter. There are no maker's marks.

 COMPACT12

So pretty, this foil effect compact has wonderful colours. The compact is done in matt gold tone metal and the lid has a wonderful picture, done on what looks like foil, of a lady gathering flowers. Wonderful gold accents bring this picture alive. The compact is in good condition throughout with just some scratching on the base and a little scratch on the frame at about 11.00 o'clock. Very unusual compact with fantastic vibrant colours. It comes with pad and sifter and measures approximately 9.5cms in diameter. It is not marked in any way.

COMPACT13

Wacky cat compact by S F Co, New York. Looks like the work of Wandart who did wonderful designs on compacts done in diamante and glitter but it is not marked as such. The compact is in great condition. There a a few minute nibbles to the edge top right and left as can be seen in the photo, but actually look worse in the picture than in real life. The back is plain white enamel and inside is a powder well with inner lid and a perfect mirror with the 'Hand Painted S F Co, N Y C' sticker still attached. It measures approximately 7cms by 6cms. You won't see another like this one!

 COMPACT14

Unusual Piccadilly design Stratton compact (as pictured on page 37 of Powder Compacts by Juliette Edwards). This design, which dates to the late 50s and early 60s, was only made for a short time so you don't see that many of them. It is in good condition and comes with its original sifter, measuring in at approximately 7.5cms in diameter. The compact in hand Stratton mark is on the inner lid.

     £34.00

COMPACT15

Beautiful deco style rectangular compact. Done in buttercup yellow and faux snakeskin enamel, which appears to be perfect, it is truly striking. The back of the compact is all faux snake skin enamel and the inside has its original sifter and pad and a perfect mirror. The top is slightly rounded giving the overall shape a sort of cushion effect. I do not think that this compact has ever been used and is very stylish. There are no makers marks and it measures approximately 8cms by 6cms.

£55.00

 COMPACT16

RARE American Fire and Casualty Company compact by ELGIN AMERICAN. This compact is square with white enamelling and the company crest on the front which states that it is the Emblem of Better Service and has American across the gold ribbon with Fire and Casualty Company, Orlando FLA across the striped bit. The colours haven't come out that well in the photo but are much better in real life as the gilding on it catches the light. The compact is in great condition and has its original marked pad and Elgin American on the inner lid. It measures approximately 7cms by 7cms.

 £30.00

COMPACT17

Very pretty STRATTON compact done in red metallic enamel. The picture, which is of a stylish lady with a willow tree is etched into the enamel in a contrasting gold colour. The compact, which is a convertible, is in great condition and has its original marked pad and sifter. It is marked Stratton on the bottom and measures approximately 8cms in diameter.

 £34.00

COMPACT18

RARE guilloche enamel compact by Terry. This is not marked but this compact can be found in many of the Compact books. All round the outside of the enamelled top there are chrome dancers standing proud of the enamel and the base of the compact is made of black bakelite. Inside there is a mirror which is slightly fogged and a swivel sifter which is missing the sieve bit. The hinge has slight give in it but appears perfectly secure. Apart form that it is in lovely condition and the price reflects these small defects. A rare compact for your collection, it measures approximately 5cms in diameter.

 £48.00

COMPACT19

Wonderful, stylish rectangular compact by WANDART. The black enamel top has been decorated with gold leaves and aurora borealis flowers which shimmer in the light. COMPACT20

Great little YARDLEY compact with attached lipstick The top has one of the Yardley logos enamelled on it, the flower seller with two children surrounded by flowers and the lipstick has some petals in enamel on it. The lipstick is pushed down slightly to open the compact which contains a clear double sided mirror, and a godet of powder. The unused 'cherry' rouge is under the mirror which swings out and it still has its original cellophane packaging on it. There is bright red lipstick in the holder. The compact is in great condition and is a wonderful design, especially the fold out mirror. It is marked Yardley on the back and measures approximately 5cms by 6.5cms.

 £38.00

Striking KIGU compact which is done in tooled gold tone with a painted porcelain panel in the middle. The panel depicts a maiden trying to wake her lover, who is asleep under a tree, with a twig. The compact is in great condition and has its original marked pad and sifter along with a clear mirror and the Kigu mark on the inner lid. I don't think this compact has ever been used and the colours are crisp and vibrant. It measures approximately 9cms in diameter.
