| Although early examples can date back to the 1920s, compacts started to become widely used in the mid 1930s. Their popularity peaked from the 1940s to around the late 60s at which time disposables with refill blocks began to take over as more convenient. There are hundreds of different designs and makers available, making compact collecting extremely interesting in its variety. Novelty compacts such as the Kigu ‘Flying Saucer’ and the Schuco animals command a premium but there are many reasonably priced compacts out there to start or expand your collection. COMPACT1 Beautiful Silver and guilloche enamel powder compact with the enamelling done in a creamy white sunray design with a picture of what look like old English roses in pink across the front. The compact is in great condition with no chips, cracks or damage to the enamelling. There are several pin prick dents in the bottom of the compact. It is hallmarked for Birmingham1962-63 and measures approximately 6.5cms (21/2 inches) in diameter. £120.00 |

COMPACT2 Extremely unusual ELGIN AMERICAN mother of pearl tiled compact with three aurora borealis hearts set in it. The hearts are so much more glittery in the flesh (difficult to capture the sparkle on the scanner). The compact is in very good condition, with only a few feint scratches on the bottom and a few marks around the outside of the mirror. It comes with a pad marked Elgin American but no sifter and the makers mark is on the inner lid. Measures approximately 6.75 (23/4 inches) wide by 5.5cms (21/4 inches) tall.

COMPACT3 Stunning guilloche enamel dance compact with vibrant turquoise coloured enamel framing a lovely pale yellow enamel with daisies and roses on it. Very good condition with no makers mark and no damage to the enamelling. Inside is a kidney shaped mirror (slight fogging), a space for rouge and the rest is empty. The back is tooled chrome and the links of the finger chain also have tooling on them as does the outer rim on the front. The compact measures approximately 5.5cms (21/8 inches) on each side. £125.00 |

COMPACT4 Unusual compact with a flock flower (I believe it is a peony rose) in lovely shades of deep pink under a dome on the front and the bottom of the compact is see through. In good condition with slight fogging on the mirror. It has a chrome coloured frame and comes with a sifter but no pad. Apologies for the reflection on the dome it is actually completely clear. Measures approximately 7cms (23/4 inches) in diameter. £38.00 |

COMPACT5 Pretty rectangular compact with white enamelled tooling surrounding a Romantic scene (which is not enamelled). The back has more fancy tooling and I think that the compact may be Czechoslovakian. It has both a pad and a sifter but the top of the pad has suffered some damage. Apart from that it is in good condition but is not signed. The mirror is bevelled. The compact measures approximately 8cms (31/8 inches) by 5.25cms (21/8 inches). £45.00 |

COMPACT6 You don't find one like this everyday!. Gorgeous Lucite top heart shaped compact with a beautiful shaded orchid design inset into it. The background is sort of sparkly under a rich amber coloured Lucite. The compact is in good condition and has it's original heart shaped sifter and pad. It measures approximately 7.5 (3 inches) by 7cms (23/4 inches) at its widest.

COMPACT7 Classic KIGU 'Cherie' compact with a lovely petit point top to it. Compact is in good condition with just some slight marks on the back. It has neither sifter nor pad and is marked 'Kigu' on the inner lid and 'Cherie' above the mirror. It measures approximately 8cms (31/4 inches) by 7.5cms (3 inches) at it's widest. The white on the bottom of the petit point is reflection from my scanner. £34.00

COMPACT8 Very pretty guilloche hexagonal compact. The back is also tooled cream guilloche without the flower pattern. I think that this compact may once have had a chain as there are two rings to the sides of the clasp. The compact is in lovely condition with only a tiny chip to the glaze on the back which cannot be seen without a magnifying glass and is mentioned for accuracy only. Inside there is space for the rouge in the lid behind a fold out mirror and the powder well is covered by a revolving metal sifter. COMPACT9 Unusual shaped gilt and black enamel compact. The front is framed in black enamel with gilt coloured leaves and the centre is a matt and shiny diamond pattern. The compact is in good condition with some surface scratching to the top and a largish patch of lighter metal on the bottom (as if something had been spilt on it). COMPACT11 Striking Richard Hudnut rouge & powder compact. The rouge, which has never been used, has its original pad and nestles behind the fold up mirror. The powder well is empty, with no pad and the catch no longer works on the inner lid. The compact is in good condition with a little surface scratching from use. COMPACT12 Extremely pretty and unusual guilloche enamel compact on what looks like brass. The guilloche is done in squares separated by stripes of brass and in shades of green and white. The compact is tooled on the sides and the bottom. It is in good condition with a few spots on the mirror and no puff, sifter or inner lid. COMPACT13 Striking Art Deco enamelled compact done in a marble effect shades of green enamel with white stripes across it. The back is all the green marbled effect enamel. The compact is in great condition, with no damage to the enamel. It has it original pad and sifter and does not look to have been used. There are a few feint scuffs on the bottom consistent with being displayed on a dresser which don't notice in normal light. It measures approximately 6.5cms (21/2 inches) by 10cms (4 inches) wide. COMPACT14 Very pretty and unusual compact with fairy flowers on the front. There are a few pin pricks of enamel missing around the edges which can be seen from the photo but certainly doesn't detract from this lovely compact. COMPACT15 Rare New Light beaded compact. The beadwork is in swirls of goldy beige, champagne and white, with small silver beads in-between, and gives a lovely shaded effect. The beads are of glass and faux pearl. Compact is in good condition with just a little fogging on the mirror and has its original pad and sifter. COMPACT16 Stylish Art Deco compact done in alternate circles of chrome and copper coloured metal with a marcasite centre. The copper colour is much more pronounced in the flesh it is just very difficult to get a good photo of this compact. The compact, which is flapjack thin, is in good condition with just a little marking around the outside of the mirror. It is unmarked, has its original sifter and measures approximately 8cms (31/8 inches) in diameter. £35.00 |

COMPACT18 Very stylish Yves Saint Laurent 1970s powder compact in the shape of a heart with varying shades of green diamante stones set in the top. Compact has never been used and has the original godet of powder under cellophane but no pad. There is a little fogging on the mirror from storage and a few small scuffs on the outer casing but the compact is still shiny and bright. It measures approximately 6.5cms (21/2 inches) by 7cms (25/8 inches) at its widest, and is very heavy.

COMPACT19 Unmarked, simple yet stylish, oval compact which has gilt coloured tooling on the front with a brown marbled enamel frame around the centre. The back is all brown marbled enamel which is made to look like tortoiseshell. No damage to the enamelling. The compact is in very good condition and has neither pad not sifter. COMPACT20 Great all round book for compact collectors. Written by Juliette Edwards of the British Compact Collectors Society it is now out of print and contains lots of useful information about compacts and an indication of value at the time of going to press. The book has 64 pages and lots of colour photos and contains sections on Art Deco, Stratton, plastics, novelties and many more. This copy is unused. £14.00 |
